She, A Chinese Wins Top Prize at Locarno

The 62nd Locarno Film Festival came to a close awarding Xiaolu Guo’s “She, A Chinese” the Golden Leopard in the festival’s international competition.

The Warp X/ Tigerlily Films production tells the story of a young Chinese girl, Mei, as she discovers the world and herself as she travels from East to West.

Xialou Guo, talking about She, A Chinese, described her ambition "to make a film that challenges the traditional Chinese cinema style, and to cross over cultural borders, with a fresh artistic language and a personal voice. To make a  film with a strong attitude coming from the younger generation in modern China, speaking about contemporary issues".

Xiaolu Guo studied at the Beijing Film Academy and received her MA in 2000. In 1999, she received the Nation's Best Screenwriter Award of China for the feature "Love In The Internet Generation", and in 2002 studied directing at the UK's National Film and Television School. A published author in China since the age of 14, her first English translated novel "Village of Stone" was shortlisted for the 2005 Independent Foreign Fiction Prize. Her Orange prize nominated novel, "A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers" was published in America and Europe in 2007, and was followed with the novel "20 Fragments of a Ravenous Youth". Her most recent novel "UFO in her eyes" is published in 6 languages in 2009.
