LA based Shortlist Music Awards was set up in 2001 to:

"honor the most adventurous and creative albums of the year across all genres of music, focusing on emerging artists rather than established hitmakers..."
That's what is says on their site anyway..

A panel of musicians, record producers, and music journalists (the "Listmakers") choose their favourite albums (the "longlist"). From this ten albums are chosen to go on the shortlist. One winner is eventually selected who receives $10,000 at the ceremony at the Knitting Factory in LA on October 29th.
Last year Sigur Ros were the chosen ones.

This years listmakers include Iggy Pop, Beck, Mos Def, India.Arie, Paul Oakenfold, the Neptunes, Jill Scott, Baz Luhrmann, Spike Jonze, Alanis Morissette, Larry Mullen, Jr. (U2), Lars Ulrich (Metallica), Damon Albarn (Blur),Greg Kot, Albert Hammond, Jr. and Nick Valensi (The Strokes), Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson (The Roots), and Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth).
